Crypto accounting for finance teams
Crypto accounting is the work of turning wallet and exchange activity into the records your accountants and auditors expect: balances, classified transactions, values in your reporting currency, and a clear month-end close.
Why crypto is hard to account for
A blockchain records transfers, not bookkeeping. Anyone can see that an address sent 40,000 USDC, but the ledger does not say whether it was a customer payout, a move between your own wallets, or a fee. Finance teams typically run into the same problems:
- Many wallets, many networks. Treasury, operations and customer-facing wallets spread over Ethereum, Tron, Solana, Bitcoin and others, often owned by different legal entities.
- No classification. Raw transfers have to be tagged as deposits, payouts, internal or intercompany transfers, swaps and fees before they mean anything in a ledger.
- Noise. Spam tokens, zero-value transfers and address-poisoning dust clutter the history of busy wallets.
- Valuation. Every balance and movement needs a price at the right date, in EUR, USD or whichever currency you report in.
- Proof. Auditors want opening and closing balances that agree with the movements in between.
What a crypto accounting process needs
- A master list of wallets and accounts, grouped by legal entity, so every address has an owner.
- Complete transaction history read from the networks, not typed in by hand.
- Classification rules that tag each transaction automatically and that you can adjust for your own flows.
- Dated prices with a record of the exact rate used.
- Statements and a reconciliation for every period, so differences show up before the auditor finds them.
- Exports that your accounting system can import.
The accounting treatment of crypto assets depends on your jurisdiction, your reporting framework and what the assets are used for. Blockledger produces the underlying records; your accountants decide how they are booked.
How Blockledger handles it
Blockledger is built around the month-end close. It reads balances and history directly from the networks and presents each wallet like a bank account, with monthly statements and a running balance on every line.
| Step | What Blockledger does |
|---|---|
| Organise | One master list of wallets and accounts, grouped by entity. Import from CSV or link a custody or payment platform read-only. |
| Clean | Filters spam tokens, zero-value transfers and lookalike-address dust. Only tokens on a verified list count as real. |
| Classify | Recognises internal and intercompany transfers, swaps and fees, and applies your own rules by sender, receiver, asset, amount or partner. |
| Value | Daily prices in EUR or USD, with every rate used listed alongside the export. |
| Reconcile | Rolls opening balances forward and compares them with actual closing balances, flagging differences. |
| Export | Excel and CSV reports, and journal exports mapped to your Business Central accounts. |
Who it is for
Finance and accounting teams at companies that hold or move crypto as part of their business: payment and gaming operators, fintechs, trading firms and treasuries. If your wallets sit with a custody provider or a payment platform, Blockledger can read them without ever holding keys or moving funds.
